Don't Be Afraid to Face Reality

It can be hard to look at your finances when it feels like everything is falling apart. Sometimes people avoid their finances because they're afraid to face the reality of their situation. If that sounds like you, this article is for you.

With rent, gas, and grocery prices continuing to rise, it's easy to shut down and slip into "survival mode." Survival mode can look like penny-pinching and spending as little as possible because you're afraid of running out of money. It can also look like constantly worrying about your finances and searching for quick ways to make money. Over time, that stress can lead to burnout—or even poor financial decisions that create bigger problems.

Instead of running from your finances, I encourage you to take control of them. Don't hide from the numbers. Face them head-on.

You may be wondering, "How do I do that?"

The answer is simple: budgeting.

Before you exit this article, stay with me. Budgeting is more helpful than you may think. Creating a budget allows you to see exactly how much money you're bringing in each month, what you're spending, how much money you have left over, and whether you need additional income to cover your monthly expenses.

There is power in knowing your numbers.

Sometimes we spend so much time worrying that we assume our situation is worse than it actually is. You may complete your budget and realize you have more money available than you thought. On the other hand, you may discover that you're coming up short each month. Either way, having a clear picture of your finances gives you the information you need to make informed decisions.

Once you know where your money is going, you can begin making adjustments. This could look like canceling unused subscriptions, switching to a lower-cost phone plan, shopping around for a better car insurance rate, or cutting back on eating out for a season.

You have more control than you think.

If you don't already have a budgeting template, don't worry—Exceeds Expectations has one available for you. And if you'd like additional support, be sure to follow our social media pages and subscribe to our weekly newsletter to stay up to date on our financial literacy courses and resources.
